The story is methodical and takes its time which i loved, the acting was stellar, the cinematography was great, the color palette made it disturbingly sweet, the arc that this film took me on was interesting and terrifying. I feel genuinely nauseous after watching this. if you want to be shocked and made to jump, don't watch this. However, if you want to be traumatized, this is your thing there isn't one jump scare, there's no loud music, no drastic editing and barely any dark scenes, figuratively.
The tone is falsely soft and upbeat. this is not filmed in a way that tells you, what you're seeing is scary. it is filmed in a way that tells you this is a different perspective on whats happening. If horror could ever be a beautiful postcard, this film has that look. it is impressive the fine brush that is taken to make a horror film in this setting.
The acting is front and center, and it isn't afraid to stick it real close to the camera, because its near flawless. The character of Christian is the worst acted in this film and that is only because the other performances are so flawless and raw. this is the first film i have seen Florence Pugh in, and she just did a decade defining performance.
The directing was very impressive, the is a shot near the stat of the film, where a car is driving down a road, and its shot in a way that unnerved me. symmetry, wides, composition and great movement of the camera is what stands out to me in this film. at times it felt omission.
The makeup and presumed special effects were shocking. the gore that is in this film felt too real, paired with the very subtle editing. it makes you feel like you saw a real death., not a dramatic movie kill. the creativity is amazingly disgusting, seeing a humans face being a stuffed toys face with straw coming out was just, if not more, effective than blood and gore.
the editing is a perfect example of less is more. simple techniques are used to heighten the realism and psychological parts of the film. something akin to a warp filter but with production and narrative behind it looks trippy. and the holding. oh its so good. when you cut away from something, it feels fake. you see everything and without overbearing audio cues. real restraint and trust in the audiences film IQ to make this. props.
Music was perfect and subtle. it was mixed perfectly and suited the setting always. it was both notable but no overbearing. I loved it. heightening the strange emotions you feel from some of these scenes must have been hard to make in a musical composition.
Whilst i have been writing this i have calmed down a bit and the images are a bit less vivid, and thankfully. it is by far, the best horror/thriller film I have seen in many years, although, its hard to genre this film. I hate it for what it has done to me, yet I love it as well for those reasons.
